As part of the campaign, West Virginia will participate in National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and National Physical Education and Sport Week May 1-7. West Virginia will celebrate the week of May 1-May 4 with Wednesday May 2 being proclaimed by the West Virginia Board of Education as Let’s Move! WV Day. This year’s theme is Let’s Move-A-Palooza! WV. Move-A-Palooza is an opportunity to participate in a wide-variety of physical activities that are fun and created specifically for every age group.
We’ve planned a variety of activities for you and your students on May 2:
10 a.m. -- Statewide Cha, Cha Slide. Let’s again show the nation that West Virginia values physical activity. If the time or dance doesn’t work for your school, choose another time and dance for May 2. Register your school online at http://www.wvphysicalactivity.org/?pid=31
10 a.m. -- All Children Exercise Simultaneously (ACES). There is no specific routine to follow, just have the students do some form of exercise at 10 a.m. Feel free to be as creative as you would like. Register your participation at http://www.lensaunders.com/aces/aces.html. This activity counts as both ACES and Let’s Move! WV if you register at both sites.
Choose your own activity for the classroom or the entire school: jump rope, hula hoop or walk. The possibilities are endless.
Research shows that quality physical education programs can contribute to students' regular participation in physical activity and can increase moderate to vigorous physical activity. The challenge is to help students identify a sport or activity that they can enjoy as much as watching television or playing computer games.
This week is the perfect opportunity to explore the Let’s Move! WV Resource Guide at http://wvde.state.wv.us/healthyschools/LetsMove.php.
